The Photo League was made up of young photographers who wanted to make images that would have a social impact. In the league, Engel was in the Feature Group under Aaron Siskind, along with Jack Manning and Harold Corsini. They worked on subjects such as Harlem Document, Park Avenue North and South and the Bowery.
