PM was a tabloid size daily newspaper, and included many top artists and writers on its staff. It was innovative and created new frontiers in journalism. Engel submitted a series of his New York Photographs, and they ended up being printed in a 7-page gallery in the Sunday edition. This began a relationship with the paper and provided Engel with assignments that led to a staff photographer position. Despite his intitial lack of experience with the standard news camera (4 x 5 speed graphic) he contributed some major work especially for their Sunday feature section.
Engel would spend an afternoon photographing Mayor Laquardia, Ingrid Bergman, Babe Ruth or Jascha Heifitz and others. PM was the only paper at the time to give photographers a credit line, and the photo staff included Weegee, Margaret Bourke-White, Arthur Leipzig and Helen Levitt. This experience which lasted for 1 ½ years, and then continued for 1 ½ years after the wra, extremely rewarding and a pleasurable experience for Engel.
